Understanding the Hub/Clutch Relationship

Kysor-style ON/OFF rear air fan clutch assemblies are two-piece systems. The first piece is the Fan Hub, which consists of an assembled pulley and mounting bracket. The second piece is the Fan Clutch, which turns on and off as needed to cool the engine.

Part number 1093-XXXXX-XX refers to an entire BorgWarner-Style fan clutch assembly. It is for reference purposes only and not available for ordering.

Most part numbers start with 1077, 1093 or 1090, but some newer hubs and assemblies start with 0100.

Why replace hub bearings

The most common cause of failure on a Kysor-style hub is bearing failure. Kit Masters recommends that the hub bearings be replaced whenever the fan clutch is repaired or replaced.

Often times, hub bearing failure leads to fan clutch failure. In these cases, replacing or repairing your fan clutch without replacing the hub bearings will damage your fan clutch and cause it to fail again.

Always replace your hub bearings when repairing or replacing your Kysor-style fan clutch.

A melted coupler (the black plastic piece that connects the clutch and hub together) is a clear sign of hub bearing failure.

If the coupler opening is completely round instead of a rounded rectangle, this is an indicator of hub bearing failure.

Damage to the end of the fan clutch shaft, or a flattened o-ring on the shaft indicates that the hub bearings are failing.

The entire fan clutch assembly part number is usually on a sticker on the mounting bracket or on the pulley. +The black plastic coupler between my fan clutch and hub is melted or deformed. What causes this?

This is caused by pulley bearing failure. Replace the pulley bearings. You may need to replace the seals in your fan clutch as well. A new black coupler will come in both the fan clutch seal kit and the bearing kit.

Yes. To maintain your product warranty, whenever you replace a Kysor-style fan clutch you must also replace the pulley bearings. Quite often, the pulley bearings are what caused the old fan clutch to fail in the first place. Replacing the fan clutch without replacing the pulley bearings will most likely cause the new fan clutch to fail as well.
